The Mughal emperors of India had a tradition of gifting pashminas to royal guests, learned men as well as favourite courtesans. They invested in this craft and thus honed the skills necessary to weave such fine cashmere.The emperors would test its quality by slipping a meter of the fabric through a pinky finger ring...for the finer the fiber, the finer the shawl was said to be.
